Iritty, had a good road transportation system even before the Indian Independence. The British has constructed many bridges in this area mainly for their timber transportation from the Coorg Forest to Tellichery port. Even they started meter gauge railway line till Vallithode for the Timber transportation.
Due to the climatic changes and heavy floods made the railway development of Iritty went to vain. So they improved the road transportation into many ways. Still some roads are remains with names like 'Company Nirath' ( Nirath means Road ) near Edoor.
Iritty Steel Bridge is one of the major bridges constructed by the British in British-India. The first Iritty Bridge was constructed by the British in the year of 1887. But after some years this smashed into the heavy flood of 1928. After the devastation of first bridge the present steel bridge construction started and inaugurated in the year of 1933.
This Steel Girders bridge is famous for technology, that used for the construction. This built on two pillars with three spans and with an excellent vibration reduction systems made this bridge to an Engineering marvel. The Steel Girders used for the bridge construction is completely imported from Great Britain. This beautiful steel Girders bridge designed and constructed by Mr. E. H. Stewart, one of the bridge engineers in British India.
